In theory, countries love their children. In theory, laws and police forces and courts and the whole suite of the state and its vast apparatus exist for the good, for the protection, of children. But of course, this is not true. This is not everything. It fails to deal, this understanding of the world, with the evil at the heart of humankind. And the evil at the heart of certain parts of the species, more so than in the hearts of others.
